Meanwhile, in the world of baseball, Thomas Pannone achieved a remarkable feat. The 32-year-old southpaw threw a nine-inning perfect game, leading the Triple-A Nashville Sounds to a 3-0 victory over the Durham Bulls. Pannone impressively retired all 27 batters on only 94 pitches. This performance marks the first nine-inning, single-pitcher perfect game in Minor League Baseball since 2017. It is the fifth solo perfect game in the 142-year history of the International League.
While his recent success stands out, Pannone is no stranger to flirting with baseball history. During his time with the Toronto Blue Jays from 2018 to 2019, he nearly completed a no-hitter in his Big League debut against Baltimore. In 2019, he also pitched an immaculate inning against Tampa Bay by striking out three batters on nine consecutive pitches.
Post-Toronto, Pannone pursued a journeyman route through various minor league systems, including the Cubs, Angels, and Yankees, and even pitched in the Korean Baseball Organization. He made a spot start for Milwaukee earlier this year, marking his first MLB appearance in three years before returning to Triple-A. Given his recent accomplishments, another chance in Major League Baseball might be on the horizon for Pannone.
