Todd Blanche, once viewed as one of the more conventional of President Trump’s political appointees, has shed this perception in his current role as acting attorney general. This position opened for him following the removal of Pam Bondi in April. Blanche has been balancing the responsibilities of stabilizing the Justice Department with actions aimed at proving his toughness to secure his title in a permanent capacity.
Initially, many believed that Blanche could effectively manage the Justice Department while taking decisive actions to please President Trump. These actions have partly focused on intensifying investigations of Trump’s perceived adversaries. An example includes the indictment of former F.B.I. director James B. Comey. The charges against Comey are based on social media posts that prosecutors described as threatening, involving an image of seashells.
Further actions by Blanche suggest a shift from his earlier moderate stance. Most notably, he announced a $1.8 billion fund aimed at aiding those who allege targeting by the federal government. This move particularly seeks to support Trump allies, including participants in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots. Blanche emphasized the department’s commitment to rectifying past government overreach, stating, “The machinery of government should never be weaponized against any American.”
Democrats quickly criticized this initiative, labeling it a “slush fund.” Additionally, a notable government oversight advocate called it “one of the single most corrupt acts in American history.” Adding to the controversy, the department attached a supplement to the fund agreement under Blanche’s authority. This supplement grants immunity to President Trump, his family, and their businesses from ongoing tax inquiries, a move that potentially shields Trump from significant financial liabilities.
These developments mark significant shifts in Blanche’s approach, sparking considerable debate and criticism, especially among those concerned with government ethics and accountability.
