Beau Bridges, who starred alongside Tom Cruise in the film “Jerry Maguire,” recently shared his admiration for the 63-year-old actor. Speaking at the “Matlock” For Your Consideration event, Bridges commented on Cruise’s evolving talent. “He’s a wonderful actor and just gets better with age,” Bridges said. “I mean, he’s still doing all those crazy stunts and stuff. And I like working with him. I thought he was great.”
Bridges’ praise for Cruise aligns with the views of others in the industry concerning Cruise’s death-defying stunts. Actor Ethan Hawke noted his mixed feelings about the expectations Cruise has set for Hollywood actors. “Tom Cruise has totally changed what’s expected for actors,” Hawke explained at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. “Some part of me is getting angry over the years because everyone somehow feels like they’re less if they use a stunt team.”
Despite not appearing in any superhero films, Cruise has established himself as an action movie icon. His performances in franchises like “Mission: Impossible,” “Top Gun,” and “Jack Reacher” have been characterized by executing increasingly dangerous stunts. During the making of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” Cruise nearly suffered a back injury while performing a particularly risky scene.
This ambitious scene in the film featured a biplane battle with Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, portrayed by director Christopher McQuarrie. It involved Cruise jumping between planes and clinging to the wing mid-air. “Oh, this almost broke my back,” Cruise remarked about the experience.
This separated the joints in Tom’s fingers from the force,McQuarrie explained. By the end of filming, Cruise’s hands were visibly swollen from the intense scenes.Reflecting on these demanding scenes, Cruise and McQuarrie discussed the physical toll, with moments of improvisation adding to the complexity. “Oh God, that was brutal,” Cruise admitted, recalling a particular instance when he grabbed a seat belt to steady himself. The sequence included a painful crash into the side of the aircraft, which Cruise remembered as “a hard one.”
Throughout these experiences, Cruise’s dedication to performing his stunts has not only marked his career but has also influenced industry standards, leading to broader discussions about actor safety and performance expectations.
