Tom Holland has made waves with his suggestion for the next actor to play Spider-Man. In an interview with Esquire, Holland expressed admiration for Owen Cooper as a potential candidate to take over the role. Holland, known for his portrayal of Spider-Man since ‘Captain America: Civil War’ in 2016, is set to reprise his role in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’
Mentorship and Transition
Drawing parallels to his relationship with Robert Downey Jr., Holland hopes to mentor a successor in a similar way. He said, “In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next.”
Owen Cooper: A Rising Star
Holland’s choice, Owen Cooper, is gaining attention for his talent. The 16-year-old recently made waves with his performance in Netflix’s ‘Adolescence,’ earning accolades such as Best Supporting Actor at Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, British Academy Television Awards, and Emmys.
“Owen Cooper would be awesome. Obviously, he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now,” Holland remarked.
Fan Reactions on Social Media
Fans responded enthusiastically to Holland’s endorsement. One fan wrote, “Owen Cooper was phenomenal in Adolescence. He absolutely has the acting chops for Peter Parker.” Another expressed excitement about the potential casting decision: “If Marvel actually pulls the trigger on this, the casting would be absolutely elite.”
However, some fans are hesitant about moving on from Holland’s version of Peter Parker. “Tom Holland out here doing God’s work by naming his successor Owen Cooper as the next Spider-Man? I see the vision but I’m still not ready to say goodbye to Tom’s Peter Parker,” one fan commented.
Future Hopes for the Franchise
In a previous Empire interview, Holland shared aspirations for the franchise’s future, mentioning the possibility of introducing characters like Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Woman. Holland expressed, “For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter.”
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set for release on July 31.
