In a recent incident on July 23, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was arrested for operating while intoxicated in Wisconsin. Newly released police bodycam footage provides insight into Romo’s interaction with the police during the arrest.
Romo was pulled over following a round at the Wisconsin Amateur Golf Championship. He stated to the officer that he was coming from a golf course and claimed he had consumed ‘zero’ drinks before attempting to contact his attorney. Upon being asked to step out of his vehicle, Romo questioned the officer’s assumption, suggesting that his presence at a golf course led to the suspicion of intoxication.
Officers detained Romo and took him to a nearby station to perform field sobriety tests. The arresting officer noted Romo’s red, glassy eyes and detected the scent of alcohol. Despite calls from legal advisors, Romo refused the breath test, telling the officer, “I’ve heard from all the lawyers don’t ever do that.”
Romo received citations for first-offense operating while intoxicated and declining to undergo a chemical test. He was released and is expected in court on September 21.
Romo later withdrew from participating in the M&P Group Texas State Open golf tournament he was set to appear in over the weekend following his arrest.
Since retiring from the NFL in 2017, Romo has served as a CBS color commentator. As a player, he served as the starting quarterback for the Cowboys from 2006 to 2015. His career statistics include 34,183 passing yards, 248 touchdowns, and 117 interceptions, with a completion rate of 65.3%. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and finished third in the MVP race in 2014. Additionally, Romo experienced memorable playoff moments, including a fumbled snap against the Seattle Seahawks that led to a heartbreaking loss.
CBS has not publicly responded to inquiries regarding Romo’s arrest as of yet. He has also chosen not to issue a personal statement concerning the incident.
