A 21-year-old student from Wichita State University, Kenny Truong, tragically drowned after jumping into a renowned swimming hole known as Blue Pool in Oregon. The incident occurred in the evening as Truong visited Tamolitch Falls with friends. Despite the best efforts of onlookers and responders, Truong was unable to reach safety.
Incident Details
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office reported that Truong struggled to swim towards the shore before ultimately submerging and failing to resurface. The distress call on June 26 at 8:47 p.m. alerted dispatchers to the scenario. The location of the incident is off Highway 126.
“Witnesses describe him struggling as he swam toward shore, before submerging,” said Linn County Undersheriff Micah Smith in a statement.
Authorities from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Lane County Sheriff’s Office, and Upper McKenzie Rural Fire responded, but the extremely cold water—averaging 37 degrees—proved treacherous. The temperature of the water can induce immediate physical shock.
Kenny Truong’s Background
Truong was a finance major at the W. Frank Barton School of Business and a significant member of the Cummings Student Managed Investment Fund. His passing deeply affected his academic and personal communities.
Hazards of Blue Pool
Known for its picturesque turquoise water and cliff views, Blue Pool is a popular site for tourists and hikers throughout the Pacific Northwest. However, the cliffs around the pool, ranging from 10 to 60 feet, couple with the cold water to create dangerous conditions. Additionally, limited cellphone service in the area complicates rescue efforts. When emergencies occur, it can take hours for an individual to reach a hospital.
Authorities have emphasized the dangers, urging visitors to understand the risks before entering the water, stay vigilant with companions, and call 911 immediately if someone is in trouble. The McKenzie River Ranger Station is available for inquiries regarding current conditions.

A GoFundMe page organized by Carter Nguyen commemorates Truong as a cherished friend who instilled confidence and camaraderie in others. Nguyen describes Truong as not only his best friend but akin to a brother. “He had a way of making everyone around him feel seen, loved, and capable,” Nguyen shared.
The community continues to mourn the loss of Truong, reflecting on his vibrant presence and the warmth he brought to those around him.
