Tragic Events Involving New Jersey State Police Officer

Lt. Ricardo J. Santos of the New Jersey State Police had been part of an elite unit responsible for protecting dignitaries. However, his name became associated with a serious incident when he was identified as the main suspect in a double murder-suicide.

Reports indicate that tensions had arisen between Lt. Santos and Dr. Lauren Semanchik, a veterinarian and his former girlfriend. In one incident, Dr. Semanchik’s car was vandalized. She reported this to local police and mentioned that Lt. Santos might be behind it as he had reportedly not taken their breakup well.

The investigating officer contacted Lt. Santos, advising him to cease all contact with Dr. Semanchik to prevent further issues. Lt. Santos agreed, acknowledging the officer’s advice.

Unfortunately, on August 1, 2025, Dr. Semanchik and her new partner, Tyler Webb, were tragically shot and killed outside her rural Pittstown, N.J. residence. Shortly afterward, Lt. Santos was found dead in what appeared to be a suicide. Prosecutors confirmed him as the sole suspect in the murders.

This was an unprecedented event for the New Jersey State Police, marking the first instance of an off-duty trooper being involved in such a grave incident. The region was left in shock, causing intensified scrutiny on the law enforcement community where Lt. Santos had served for twenty years.
