A man fatally shot his wife and their six children before taking his own life amid a house fire, according to authorities on Monday. Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their children, aged 5 to 15, were discovered in their Grand Haven Township residence near Lake Michigan on Friday.
Authorities responded to reports of a fire and found the bodies. Autopsies revealed gunshot wounds as the cause of death and confirmed Kristopher Karolkiewicz’s suicide, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Captain Jacob Sparks reported.
Sparks indicated that the fire was deliberately ignited in several sections of the house after the murders. Investigations continue to determine any additional details surrounding the incident.
“The investigation at this point shows that this was a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders,” Sparks stated. “The case remains open and under investigation to try to get to the bottom and get answers of what happened leading up to the incident.”
Kristopher Karolkiewicz recently served as a vice president of sales and marketing at the American Heart Association until early October. He worked remotely in a division focused on CPR and first aid training.
Amanda, known as Mandy, worked as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary School. Kristin Perkowski, superintendent of Grand Haven Area Public Schools, praised her commitment to students, highlighting her kindness and willingness to assist whenever needed.
The couple first met at a beverage company in 2008 and began dating that summer. They married in August 2009, with their first son born in 2011. Over the years, they had two more sons, adopted two daughters, and had another biological son. Mandy expressed her Christian faith and love for her family through a blog she kept until 2016 and later by sharing TikTok videos.
Her family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover expenses and create a scholarship in memory of the Karolkiewicz children. “This past weekend, our family experienced a tragedy beyond words,” the page notes. “Any funds remaining after legal expenses will go toward establishing a scholarship in the children’s memory.”
