Tragic Loss for Soccer Star Lucas Trejo in Venezuela Earthquakes

The search for Lucas Trejo’s family ended after 74 hours with a heartbreaking outcome. Rescue crews recovered the bodies of his wife and two children from the ruins of an apartment building that collapsed during Wednesday’s twin earthquakes. The Argentine soccer star plays as a center back for Sport Maritimo de La Guaira in Venezuela.

The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela’s northern coast. Trejo was in Caracas with his team when he learned about the collapse in Playa Grande, La Guaira.

In his early attempts to find his family, Trejo reached out on social media, “Our building in Playa Grande collapsed. I don’t know anything about my family,” he wrote on Instagram, urging prayers and help.

“Please pray for them and share this message in case someone saw them. I want to believe they weren’t there,” added Trejo.

His determination brought his father and brother from Argentina to assist volunteers and emergency services sorting through debris. The aftermath of the earthquakes has left widespread destruction, highlighting the need for ongoing recovery efforts.

Rescuers ultimately found the bodies of Trejo’s wife, Yanina Maranella, and their children, Aaron and Ainhoa.

A wave of support surged from the soccer community across South America. Argentine footballer Edson Tortolero, grieving for Trejo’s loss, shared his sorrow, “Today my heart breaks into a thousand pieces,” he expressed.

“There are no words that can ease so much pain. I ask God to give Lucas strength to endure this unimaginable loss,”

Club Sport Maritimo de La Guaira released a statement, “We join the grief that overwhelms player Lucas Trejo for the passing of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and of his children, Aaron and Ainhoa Trejo. Peace to their souls and comfort for Lucas and all his loved ones,” they declared.

The earthquakes have claimed many lives and emergency crews persist in the region, working tirelessly to assist those affected.
