An accident early on Tuesday involved a train and a minivan at a level-crossing near Buggenhout station, approximately 14 miles from Brussels. Emergency services responded to the scene of the crash at the Vierhuizen railway crossing, where the mishap occurred.

According to RTL TV, citing Transport Minister Jean-Luc Crucke, four individuals lost their lives when a train collided with a school bus. The victims included two teenagers, the bus driver, and an adult accompanying the students. The report also mentioned two severe injuries as a result of the incident.

The collision took place at a level-crossing near Buggenhout station. Security cameras confirmed that the crossing’s barriers were down at the time of the accident, said Crucke.

In response to the tragic event, Interior Minister Bernard Quintin expressed deep sadness in a post on X. Belgian police spokespeople have not yet commented on the incident.

Collision incidents at level-crossings have a recurring history in Belgium, where a dense railway network connects many towns and villages. Infrabel, the railway infrastructure operator, reported that five people died in level-crossing accidents in 2025, which was the lowest count since 2020.
