Transgender athlete AB Hernandez excelled in three girls’ jumping events during the preliminary round of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state track & field championships on Friday. Hernandez secured first place in the girls’ long jump and triple jump, advancing to the finals in all three events including high jump, set for Saturday evening.
Having been at the center of a national controversy over participation in girls’ competitions since last May, Hernandez’s achievements are taking place against a backdrop of political discourse. Concurrently, a “Save Girls Sports” rally was held nearby, where candidate Steve Hilton advocated for protecting girls’ sports alongside local activists and an Olympic gold medalist.
Representing Jurupa Valley High School, Hernandez emerged at the top in the girls’ long jump with a score of 20-05.50, outperforming Ellie McCuskey-Hay of St. Ignatius. Hernandez dominated the triple jump with a commendable distance of 41′ 8.5, but tied for fourth in the high jump.
Adding to the narrative, Hernandez appeared in a video with democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer earlier on Friday. Steyer expressed strong support for Hernandez, emphasizing the need for safety and protection against negative impacts, and praising Hernandez’s courage and actions.
Alongside this, a rally organized by former NCAA women’s soccer player Sophia Lorey took place. Steve Hilton, state superintendent candidate Sonja Shaw, and Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Brown participated. The rally centered around concerns for female athletes and perceived injustices in sports opportunities, emphasizing the importance of raising voices and taking action.
Steve Hilton critiqued Gov. Gavin Newsom during the rally, accusing him of inaction amidst perceived unfairness, which is tied to ideological influences within the party.
The CIF’s recent pilot program, designed to address controversy, allows female athletes who finish behind Hernandez to receive higher placements. This program means Hernandez shares podium positions with other female athletes throughout the tournament, and it will persist in the finals.
As the finals approach, Hernandez aims to reclaim top positions in the competitions, maintaining focus amid ongoing discussions around politics and fairness in sports.
