Travel Delays for Pope Leo XIV During Spain Visit

Pope Leo XIV encountered a travel delay on his trip back to Rome from Spain. A technical issue with his Iberia charter flight caused the delay. King Felipe VI stepped in to provide his private jet for the pope’s departure.

The incident occurred at Santa Cruz de Tenerife airport in the Canary Islands. Pope Leo and his delegation boarded King Felipe’s Falcon jet, departing three hours later than planned.

The technical problem disrupted the conclusion of Leo’s successful trip across Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands. His engagements included promoting his message on migration and inaugurating the new tower at Sagrada Familia basilica.

The initial issue was with the plane’s engine, which failed to start after passengers boarded. Attempts to repair it required disembarkation. Iberia arranged for another aircraft from Madrid to transport Vatican officials and journalists left behind.

Veteran Vatican reporters recalled similar incidents during St. John Paul II’s papacy. In 1986, a snowstorm diverted John Paul’s flight to Naples. Another incident in 1988 led to an unplanned landing in South Africa during his visit to Lesotho.

Papal flights typically involve the Italian national carrier ITA Airways for international travel, with the hosting country’s airline managing the return trip. On occasions, ITA conducts round trips for longer journeys or destinations with limited capacity.

Iberia shared footage of Pope Leo enjoying his flight between Spanish cities. Military aircraft provided an escort, highlighting the honor given to visiting dignitaries.
