A tree fell and killed a man Wednesday afternoon on Furnessville Road in Pine Township. The Porter County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Hispanic man died at the scene, and the Porter County Coroner’s Office is now handling the case.
The coroner’s office is working closely with the sheriff’s office to confirm the man’s identity. The standard protocol involves notifying the family before releasing the name to the public.
Authorities received a call at 1:55 p.m. regarding the incident, which happened on the 200 block of Furnessville Road. On arrival, officers spoke with a witness who reported three men had approached him for assistance. When this individual reached the scene, he found the victim with his head pinned under the tree.
The group of four attempted to lift the tree without success. One person used a chainsaw to try cutting the tree, but efforts failed, according to the sheriff’s report. The three men left the location before emergency personnel arrived.
