Trump and Zelenskyy Meeting on Ukraine Conflict at G7 Summit

As the G7 summit begins, Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine is at the forefront of discussions. Leaders from Italy, Germany, Britain, Japan, and Canada have begun gathering, engaging in lively conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as they wait for other attendees. Among those yet to arrive are President Donald Trump, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and France’s President Emmanuel Macron.

Trump has expressed hope for progress in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Yesterday, Trump stated that now that the situation with Iran has been addressed, efforts can shift towards Ukraine. Prior to the war with Iran dominating the agenda, U.S. involvement in seeking resolutions for Ukraine had been more pronounced. These efforts have diminished recently, prompting Zelenskyy to urge Western allies to redirect focus towards Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia.

In separate developments, energy prices saw a notable decline alongside a modest rise in global stocks following the U.S.-Iran agreement, which aims to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. crude oil prices fell by 4.8% to $80.75 per barrel, while Brent crude prices decreased by 4.7% to $83.17 per barrel. These prices represent the lowest closing values since early March, shortly after the conflict with Iran commenced.

Vice President JD Vance confirmed that nuclear inspectors will be permitted to return to Iran, adhering to the terms of the agreement with the U.S. This arrangement involves the International Atomic Energy Agency assisting Iran in dismantling its highly enriched stockpile, outlined in the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the countries. Vance noted that the MOU text will become public following a formal signing ceremony slated for Friday in Switzerland.

At the G7 summit, Trump faces European allies who disagree with his approach to two military conflicts. Some allies question the initiation of the war with Iran, while others urge Trump to intensify efforts to halt the Russia-Ukraine war.
