President Donald Trump intensified his criticism of Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, accusing the progressive candidate of supporting communism. Trump’s remarks followed El-Sayed’s victory over Rep. Haley Stevens in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary by a narrow margin. El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers in November for the seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters.
During a speech in Las Vegas, Trump spent considerable time targeting democratic socialist candidates, asserting that they promote communist ideologies. He labeled communism as the most significant threat to the United States.
“These people are dangerous and, frankly, they are lunatics. They’re crazy, and we can’t let them get into office,” Trump said. “Communism is the greatest threat to our country, in its history, including even World War One, World War Two, Pearl Harbor, 9/11. I think it’s the greatest threat.”
The White House amplified Trump’s remarks on social media, emphasizing his claim. Trump humorously criticized what he described as the impact of communist policies on Americans, suggesting it would lead to poverty and despair.
Trump cited Venezuela as an example of the negative consequences of communist policies, recalling how a wealthy nation deteriorated over the past two decades.
Upon mentioning El-Sayed, Trump received significant audience reaction.
“When I watch Abdul, he’s full of s—,” Trump said.
El-Sayed’s win positions him as a progressive candidate in a closely observed Senate race. Endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, El-Sayed campaigned on policies like Medicare for All, reducing political funding, and ceasing U.S. military support to Israel. Although a self-described capitalist, Republicans often associate him with the democratic socialist movement.
Trump revisited previous statements from his presidency, asserting that America will not become a socialist state, arguing that Democrats aim beyond socialism towards communism.
Trump vowed to oppose what he described as the Democratic Party’s leftward trend.
“Together we will defeat communism, socialism, and Marxism in America once and for all,” Trump said. “It’s defeated. It’s going to go down. It always goes down.”
The White House and El-Sayed’s campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
