President Donald Trump has made remarks about Dr. Anthony Fauci’s baseball abilities ahead of Fauci’s Senate committee testimony on Wednesday.
On Truth Social, Trump commented on Fauci’s ceremonial first pitch at Major League Baseball’s season opener in July 2020. Trump’s post included a clip showing Fauci’s failed pitch and stated, “Fauci told everyone he was a great basketball player, so I assumed that he would be easily able to throw a ball to Home Plate.” He further criticized Fauci, calling him “a phony” and describing him as a “terrible ‘athlete,’” referring to the pitch as the worst throw he has seen in years.
Fauci, who formerly led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, coordinated the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He frequently disagreed with Trump’s untested public health ideas during Trump’s initial term. Fauci’s upcoming testimony is scheduled for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and follows the release of his diary entries by Senator Rand Paul.
Paul stated on X, “If Anthony Fauci comes before my committee tomorrow and perjures himself, his preemptive pardon from Joe Biden will not protect him.” The senator has repeatedly challenged Fauci over COVID-19 policies and accused him of hiding the true origins of the virus, a claim Fauci denies.
Insights from Fauci’s Diary
The released diary pages reveal private discussions from the pandemic’s early days. These entries show debates on the virus’s origins, concerns about Trump’s messaging, and conflicts within the government. Some entries express uncertainty regarding COVID-19’s origins, discussing theories of animal-to-human transmission or a lab leak incident.
One diary entry from January 26, 2020, noted, “we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier,” suggesting the virus jumped from animals to humans. A later entry on January 31, 2020, highlighted scientists’ concerns over the virus’s features, mentioning the furin cleavage site. Fauci considered the possibility of it being deliberately inserted and released, either accidentally or intentionally.
Paul charged that Fauci misled the public by reporting the virus as originating from a wet market while his diary suggested different details.
COVID-19 Origin Investigations
Investigations into the pandemic virus’s origins remain inconclusive. The World Health Organization’s expert group, in a final report, stated uncertainty about the pandemic’s beginnings. Most data supports the theory of animal-to-human transmission, but the team couldn’t obtain data to consider a lab accident as a cause.
Scientists largely think the virus circulated in bats before infecting another species, which then infected humans. Human cases emerged in late 2019 in Wuhan, home to research labs analyzing coronaviruses, sparking debates over a potential lab leak. The CIA suspects a lab origin but has “low confidence” in their assessment.
Fauci and Biden’s Preemptive Pardons
Dr. Fauci was among those given preemptive pardons by President Joe Biden, designed to protect against anticipated attacks by Trump’s administration. Biden clarified these pardons shouldn’t imply any wrongdoing or serve as an admission of guilt.
Trump previously mocked Fauci’s pitching skills, commenting in October 2020 about Fauci’s “pitching arm…far more accurate than his prognostications” regarding his Opening Day pitch that went viral due to missing the target.
