President Donald Trump criticized Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, referring to him as a “loser” while discussing Tillis’ stance on nominating Todd Blanche for Attorney General. Trump’s comments came while aboard Air Force One, suggesting Tillis didn’t seek re-election because he lacked support from the president.
Tillis, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has expressed his unwillingness to support any nominee who downplays the violence on January 6 during the Capitol attack. Tillis emphasized to reporters that nominees must be clear in their condemnation of such actions.
The key for Todd, or anybody going through the judiciary committee, is being pretty tight on January the 6. They better not have said for one minute that the people that beat up police officers, like these right down here, were righteous people. You come even close to saying that, you don’t have a chance of getting my vote in judiciary,
Tillis noted that addressing the “issue” of the anti-weaponization fund might help Blanche’s confirmation prospects. The fund was meant to compensate those unfairly targeted by the government but has faced criticism and legal challenges.
Newsweek reached out to Tillis for further comments. Concerns arose from Blanche’s past association with Trump in high-profile cases. Despite this, the White House backed Blanche, highlighting his effective leadership. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson endorsed Blanche, describing him as a patriot and a stellar leader.
While Blanche has acted as Attorney General since April, replacing Pam Bondi, his confirmation faces hurdles. Lawmakers will evaluate his qualifications and the dynamics between the White House and the Justice Department. Trump’s endorsement of close allies, like Blanche, continues to influence key appointments.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune acknowledged the delicate balance in confirming Blanche due to the slim Republican majority. Texas Senator John Cornyn expressed openness to the nomination but emphasized the dual role of the Attorney General as both a cabinet member and the nation’s chief law enforcement officer.
