Protests Against Proposed Resort in Albania
Thousands of Albanian citizens protested this week against a proposed luxury resort development linked to Jared Kushner’s investment firm. Concerns have been raised about potential threats to a protected coastal area, home to diverse wildlife including flamingos, seals, and sea turtles. Demonstrators expressed their opposition loudly, with placards displaying phrases like ‘Albania is not for sale’ and references to Ivanka Trump, urging her to keep away from the Vjosa-Narta wetland.
These protests have been taking place in Tirana, Albania’s capital, culminating in a large demonstration on Thursday. Heavy machinery has made its presence known at the resort’s proposed site, adding urgency to the protests.
Albania belongs to the Albanian people and we decide what happens here, said Lindita Komani, a writer who joined the protest.
Environmental and Political Concerns
Environmentalists fear destruction of habitats crucial for wildlife in the region. The site, known for its biodiversity, is a critical area for species such as flamingos, seals, and sea turtles. Calls for resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama have intensified due to perceived mismanagement.
Ornithologist Ledi Selgjekaj highlighted the significance of the flamingo population, urging careful consideration in development plans.
The WWF firmly condemned the project, highlighting its potential impact on the Vjosa-Narta ecosystem, a key Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot. Destruction of natural habitats raises alarms about compliance with environmental laws and Albania’s commitments to the EU.
Political and Social Tensions
While protests have mostly remained peaceful, some instances of violence occurred, with clashes between protesters and security forces reported. Police employed measures such as water cannons during these confrontations. Broader anti-government protests related to corruption allegations have also escalated in recent months.
Details of the Resort Project
The proposed resort consists of two parts: a coastal development in the Narta Lagoon and a smaller resort on the uninhabited island of Sazan. Legal changes in 2024 affecting land classifications, including those at Vjosa-Narta and Sazan, are under investigation by authorities.
The project promises economic benefits with plans for significant development, including 10,000 hotel rooms to transform the region into a high-end tourist destination. Despite environmental concerns, Albanian Prime Minister Rama supports the project as a major boost to the tourism industry.
Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump visited Albania this year, continuing discussions with the government. The final proposal and environmental assessments remain incomplete.
Asher Abehsera, chairman of Sazan Real Estate Development, emphasized commitment to environmental responsibility and community impacts.
Ivanka Trump recounted her discovery of the island during a casual trip with friends, expressing her fascination with the location.
Past controversies in Serbia involving similar projects underscore challenges in developments tied to Kushner-linked investments.
