The Qatari-donated plane given to President Trump has come under scrutiny regarding its defensive capabilities. Concerns have been raised about whether it adequately protects a U.S. president and others on board.
Recently, President Trump exited this jet in South Dakota. He mentioned that the plane, a Boeing 747-800, may soon receive additional defensive features. This is aimed at equipping it to match the standards of older jets traditionally used for presidential travel.
The president shared these comments after traveling back to Washington from New Jersey on the jet. He expressed intentions to take this aircraft with him for his presidential library when his term ends.
A reporter in the presidential motorcade questioned the plane’s lack of antimissile defenses. Mr. Trump responded, “Well, it has — it has a lot, and you know it has a lot of capability, but as I understand it, in about a month or so, they’re going to send it to have it be maxed out. So they’re going to be sending it, and they’ll have it be maxed out.”
The exact nature of the upgrades remains unclear. It is also uncertain whether the estimated time frame of a month for these enhancements is accurate. A White House spokesman did not provide further details when contacted for clarification.
This situation suggests that the current security features of the plane may not be as comprehensive as those of aircraft built specifically to serve as Air Force One.
