President Donald Trump stepped into Colombia’s presidential election by endorsing a right-wing candidate. This move reflects his repeated involvement in foreign elections during his second term.
On Truth Social, Trump praised Abelardo De La Espriella, who advanced to the second round of voting. He will compete against a candidate from the party of the current left-wing president, Gustavo Petro. Trump commended De La Espriella for his achievements and support, using the campaign nickname ‘El Tigre’.
Trump’s message highlighted the importance of the election for U.S.-Colombia relations, offering his complete endorsement. Moreover, Trump labeled Iván Cepeda, De La Espriella’s opponent in the runoff, a ‘Radical Left Marxist’. Cepeda’s team did not immediately respond.
On the same night, De La Espriella expressed gratitude for Trump’s strong support. He vowed to enhance U.S.-Colombia ties. He emphasized the U.S. role in addressing crime, narcoterrorism, and liberating Colombia from violence.
