President Trump has endorsed Pamela Evette, the lieutenant governor of South Carolina, as the state’s next governor. This endorsement arrives shortly after state legislators finished a special session without voting on a new congressional map. The proposed map aimed to eliminate South Carolina’s only majority Black district by creating an entirely Republican delegation. Evette had been a vocal supporter of this redistricting effort.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump praised Evette as a “good friend, fighter, and WINNER” and acknowledged her strong support for him. This endorsement aligns Trump with the current governor, Henry McMaster, who is term-limited and supports Evette as his successor.
Trump also indicated that he expects Evette would opt for Henry McMaster Jr., the governor’s son, as her lieutenant governor. In the heated Republican primary, six candidates are competing, including Representatives Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace, Alan Wilson, the state’s attorney general, and former business executive Rom Reddy.
Both parties will hold their primary on June 9. This story is developing, and updates will follow.
