Trump Faces Declining Approval Among Women on Economic Issues

President Donald Trump’s approval rating regarding the economy among women has reached a low point. A CBS News Battleground Tracker poll reveals that only a little over 25% of women approve of the president’s economic management. This polling, conducted from September 8-11 with 2,460 U.S. adults, occurs as Trump and Republican candidates aim to maintain their congressional majorities in the upcoming November midterms. Trump has been positioning himself as a central figure in these campaigns. At a recent rally in Dallas, Texas, he urged his supporters by stating, “Pretend that I’m on the ballot. I’m on the ballot, just one more time.”

The economy remains a top concern for U.S. voters. Trump argues that his administration has improved financial conditions. However, the decline in support among women presents a significant hurdle for both Trump and the GOP. Historically, women have been one of Trump’s weakest demographic groups, often tilting towards the Democratic side. The Pew Research Center’s latest survey indicates that 52% of women favor the Democrats, compared to 38% for the Republicans.

The decrease in confidence in Trump’s management of the economy and inflation may challenge Republicans in competitive House and Senate races. With all 435 House seats and 33 Senate seats up for election, potential losses could alter the direction of Trump’s presidency.

Key Findings

The new CBS survey indicates that 27% of female respondents approve of Trump’s economic management, dropping five points since a July CBS poll. Approval for his inflation handling is even lower at 22%, a three-point decrease. This gap holds potential political significance as Trump has traditionally been strong in economic issues.

Fear over the economy’s health, especially concerning affordability and the impact of the conflict in Iran, looms large among voters. The Financial Times and Focaldata poll shows Trump’s overall economic approval at a new low of 33%, a three-point drop from the previous month. The poll reports a continued slide in Trump’s general approval ratings among women since July, with only 33% approval and 67% disapproval.

What the Polls Say

CNN’s latest Poll of Polls finds Trump at 35% approval and 63% disapproval. This average combines six national surveys from July 22 to August 31, including polls by Reuters/Ipsos, UMass Amherst/YouGov, and others. RealClearPolling’s average from August 16 to September 8 reports a slightly higher 39.5% approval, yet still reflecting a negative outlook with midterms nearing.

White House Response to Approval Ratings

The White House often dismisses negative polling on Trump’s approval. Spokesperson Davis Ingle previously stated to Newsweek that Trump’s nearly 80 million voters provided him with a mandate to pursue his widely applauded agenda. Ingle highlighted Trump’s efforts to create jobs, curb inflation, and enhance housing affordability.
