Menopause Often Missing in Health Records, Study Finds

A significant analysis involving data from nearly 396,000 women reveals that menopause is frequently absent from electronic health records, despite being self-reported by the women. Researchers from the University of Colorado Anschutz conducted the study using data from participants in the National Institutes of Health’s All of Us Research Program. This research uncovered a notable disparity between survey responses from women and records available in their medical files. Such a gap hinders efforts to understand women’s health and disease risks.

Menopause is a common life stage, yet the study identified that electronic health records (EHRs) rarely document it. The dataset showed that only around 7 percent of women had menopause recorded in their records. Lead researcher Audrey Hendricks mentioned that the absence of menopause documentation often arises because it isn’t routinely noted during medical visits. Hendricks shared with Newsweek that menopause usually gets recorded when a woman brings it up, unlike standardized fields like blood pressure or weight, which always get noted. As a result, menopause gets captured in physicians’ notes, challenging researchers to access the data.

A more evident gap surfaced when comparing women’s survey responses with EHR data. For women reported as having undergone menopause in surveys, only about 14 percent had matching documentation in their electronic records. This discrepancy highlights a clear mismatch in data sources. An analysis identified about 193,000 menopause reports in surveys compared to roughly 28,000 from electronic health records, showing surveys had seven times more mentions.

Researchers pointed out that missing menopause data is not due to inaccuracies in medical records. Rather, menopause information often doesn’t appear at all. Where it exists, it generally aligns with survey reports, but often, no menopause-related information is included. This omission raises concerns as menopause plays a crucial role in health research. For example, it influences cardiometabolic health and other health aspects. Despite its importance, much remains unstudied; researchers continue exploring how menopause timing affects health, variations in menopause experiences, and its impact on different populations.

In addressing the absence of menopause information, Hendricks emphasized the challenge it poses, especially in understanding the interplay between menopause and disease. The lack of data on the age at menopause makes it difficult to discern between menopause effects and aging. Heart health illustrates the challenge: while heart disease risk rises post-menopause, the balance between hormonal impacts and aging remains unclear.

The study also found missing key details. Records often lacked confirmation of menopause status and information on the age at menopause. Such gaps complicate research, especially where detailed data are necessary for understanding links between menopause and health risks. Comprehensive datasets, like those from programs such as All of Us, promise insights into menopause’s role in health, but only if data quality is high. Incomplete records restrict understanding of menopause’s impact on women’s health over time.

Beyond data gaps, the researchers believe their findings offer guidance for future studies using the All of Us database. Improved data quality can support defining menopause-related study groups, designing projects, and calculating participant needs. They advocate for more consistent, complete collection of menopause and reproductive health data. Hendricks suggests asking systematic questions in routine appointment forms as a practical way forward. Inquiry into menstrual cycles and menopause status during annual physicals, OB-GYN visits, and mammograms could ensure consistent data collection.

Through enhanced documentation, researchers could better explore menopause-health linkages, assess age-related disease risks, and study outcomes across varied populations. Improving menopause-related data availability may advance knowledge and enhance care for women in the future.
