Trump Inaugurates Women’s Health Divisions

President Trump has signed an order creating executive offices focused on women’s health research, an initiative driven by first lady Melania Trump.

Today we’re taking historic action to promote women’s health through all phases of life, despite amazing advances in medical science, many diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect women remain chronically understudied, President Trump stated.

The order establishes a Women’s Health Division at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a White House Women’s Health Task Force. The task force will be led by White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Melania Trump, speaking from the White House Rose Garden, emphasized the importance of addressing women’s health at every stage of life, from young girls to mature women.

According to a White House fact sheet, more research is needed on issues such as Alzheimer’s disease, endometriosis, polyendocrine metabolic ovary syndrome, infertility, maternal health, and menopause. Some women’s health programs faced potential funding cuts early in the Trump administration, such as the NIH’s attempt to reduce the Women’s Health Initiative program’s funding as part of a mandate to reduce NIH contracts by $2.6 billion, though this decision was later reversed.
