Soccer fans heading to the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday faced hours-long delays at the stadium due to increased security measures for President Donald Trump’s attendance.
Arrivals at the 82,500-seat New York New Jersey Stadium for the match between Spain and Argentina passed through multiple security checkpoints and airport-style screenings well before the kickoff.
Presidential Security Protocols Cause Gridlock
Some fans experienced nearly two-hour waits to clear security as the U.S. Secret Service led the safety operations, according to BBC Sport. The White House had announced Trump’s attendance beforehand, and the president is expected to join FIFA President Gianni Infantino for the trophy presentation ceremony.
Having a sitting U.S. president increased security protocols significantly. The event, designated a National Special Security Event, involved additional screening procedures, restricted entry points, and an expanded law enforcement perimeter.
Double-Layer Screening Generates Bottlenecks
Stadium gates opened four hours before the start in an attempt to handle the large crowds. Organizers added more entry points throughout the afternoon to ease queues, yet long lines remained outside. Security at the stadium included both the Secret Service and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) conducting two levels of screening.
Crew members with media credentials and operational staff faced delays. Some were directed to different security areas due to the temporary absence of specific resources, such as explosive-detection dogs, at certain gates, as reported by BBC Sport.
Logistics Reflect Recent High-Profile Appearances
The security approach mirrored those seen during Trump’s appearance at Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in June, which also required extensive coordination between the Secret Service and local law enforcement.
With the United States set to host several major international sporting events in the future, the World Cup experience underscores the logistical challenges of high-profile political attendance at already crowded events.
Despite the long waits outside, tournament organizers confirmed there were no plans to delay the kickoff, and the match proceeded as scheduled.
