Trump Sees Slight Rise in Approval Ratings Amid Mixed Public Sentiment

President Donald Trump has recently witnessed his highest approval rating in approximately six months, according to the latest Morning Consult Political Intelligence Weekly Tracker. The increase suggests a modest improvement in public sentiment. This survey shows a lift in Trump’s job approval, reaching its peak since earlier this year, although it remains under strain from several key issues.

The tracker reveals Trump’s current approval rating at 45.2%, with a disapproval rating of 51.9%, equating to a net approval of about -7%. This indicates a 6% net improvement compared to a similar survey from the prior month. The last time Trump held an approval rate of -6.7% or better was in January, with a -6.5% figure.

Grant Reeher, a political science professor at Syracuse University, discussed the distinction between the Morning Consult tracker and the YouGov/Economist poll. Reeher explained that one poll targeted registered voters, while the other surveyed ‘U.S. Citizens.’ He noted, “Republicans often have a relative advantage in actual voting versus registration.” Reeher speculated that the recent uptick in Trump’s numbers might result from various political events, though nothing substantial has altered within his administration.

In the tracker, Trump holds a 43% favorability rating, contrasting with a 53% unfavorable view. Additionally, 4% of respondents remain uncertain. The survey reached around 2,200 registered U.S. voters in the week concluding July 27 and has a 2% margin of error.

Trump garnered two net positive responses on issues like immigration and national security. However, he ranks negatively in areas such as the economy, healthcare, trade, and foreign policy. Despite his recent gains, Trump faces mixed public standing as other surveys still present him with net-negative approval ratings. These ratings reflect a sharp divide along partisan lines.

Significant variations exist between Morning Consult’s findings and results from other national polls, emphasizing the need to consider polling averages in assessing public opinion. The latest data portrays a nuanced political landscape. Morning Consult suggests Trump has regained footing, posting his best numbers in months, yet other major pollsters highlight ongoing challenges to his popularity.

The YouGov/Economist survey, released on Tuesday, reported Trump’s approval at 34% and disapproval at 62%. Conducted between July 25 and July 27 with 1,559 U.S. adults, the survey holds a 3.3% margin of error. An Ipsos/Reuters poll displayed a 37% approval against a 60% disapproval, executed from July 24 to July 26 among 1,248 respondents with a 2.9% margin of error. Additionally, a Fox News Poll showed a 39% approval and 61% disapproval, surveyed from July 17 to July 20 among 1,003 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
