Trump Signs $70 Billion Homeland Security Bill

President Donald Trump signed a $70 billion homeland security bill on Wednesday, achieving a key legislative victory. This Senate-crafted measure narrowly passed the House despite the thin Republican majority.

Speaking from the Oval Office with prominent lawmakers like House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Trump expressed his enthusiasm for funding the Department of Homeland Security. The bill provides essential resources for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol through the remainder of Trump’s term.

“The bill provides crucial funding for domestic law enforcement investigations and combating child exploitation, continuing our work to restore law and order across our nation, and to protect America’s youth,” Trump stated.

Trump criticized congressional Democrats for attempting to block funding for the Department of Homeland Security. He accused them of trying to return the U.S. to disorder and corruption. The president also directed criticism at former President Joe Biden for his immigration policies and former Vice President Kamala Harris for not engaging with border patrol efforts.

Trump highlighted that fentanyl smuggling has decreased by nearly 60%, with law enforcement focusing on land routes.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise emphasized the necessity of the bill amidst increased security concerns. Although conservatives initially resisted due to an interest in formalizing Trump’s immigration-related orders, they ultimately supported the legislation.

All Senate Democrats and Republican Lisa Murkowski opposed the bill, believing a significant allocation to ICE was inappropriate. They argued the agency has a history of detrimental impacts on communities.

The bill passed after a deadline extension and overcame challenges, including opposition related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot funding concerns.
