On Monday, President Donald Trump issued a firm warning about vandalism occurring on the National Mall. His concern focused on a specific marking, ‘8647,’ found etched in the browned grass, which authorities linked to damage near the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
The marking appeared on the National Mall lawn on June 11. Authorities responded swiftly, launching an investigation into the etched numbers. The reflecting pool, recently reopened after a $14 million renovation, displayed algae blooms and peeling blue paint shortly after opening. These developments spurred official investigations, resulting in arrests around the pool area.
Trump addressed the issue directly on Truth Social. He cautioned federal authorities would impose strict penalties. “Of the many statues and fountains rebuilt, renovated, and cleaned, only the Reflecting Pool was vandalized. It is being addressed immediately,” Trump stated. “A 300-foot-long gash and chemicals were illegally placed in the water. The grass field was destroyed with a gigantic ’86 47′ chemically carved into it, possibly inspired by Dirty Cop, James Comey! Remember, a 10-year prison sentence applies to such destruction, fully enforced!”
