In recent events, President Donald Trump shared an altered image on Sunday depicting former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, boarding a modified Air Force One. The aircraft appeared to be covered with graffiti, including the slogans “Yes We Can,” “Obama,” and “BLM,” representing the Democratic campaign and Black Lives Matter movement. Additionally, Arabic graffiti was included, conveying the phrase “alhamdulillah,” translating to “praise be to God.”
The graffiti imagery carried connotations of crime and urban decay, often used with racist intent against Black communities. This follows a pattern of Trump’s personal attacks on the Obamas. He previously spread falsehoods regarding Obama’s birth and made derogatory remarks about predominantly Black nations, sparking outrage on his Truth Social account.
The problematic post came months after another racist image from February, coinciding with Black History Month. It portrayed the Obamas as primates, which was removed after backlash from civil rights leaders and Republican senators. Trump did not issue an apology, attributing the post to a staff member.
This latest controversy ties into discussions around Trump’s recent use of the new Air Force One, valued at $400 million. Donated by Qatar, it features a navy-blue underside with red and gold stripes, differing from its previous light blue design, which helped blend the aircraft into the sky.
Following his Independence Day speech in Washington, Trump had no public engagements on Sunday, spending time at his Virginia golf club. He scheduled a departure for Turkey on Monday for a NATO summit. The White House and representatives for the Obamas have yet to comment.
In another post last month, Trump circulated a digitally altered image of the Obama presidential library in Chicago, suggesting it was surrounded by waste and topped with garbage bags. He claimed it would become a “Mecca” for anti-Americans. Trump’s criticism of the library has been persistent, including multiple shares on his social media.
Sunday’s series of posts included an image of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, with the phrase “RESTRAINING ORDER NEEDED” as Meloni smiles and looks upward at Trump. Trump previously claimed Meloni repeatedly requested photos during the Group of Seven summit, allegations which led to Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceling a Washington visit and Meloni rejecting Trump’s assertions as “completely fabricated.”
