Trump’s Debate on Election Integrity

President Trump continues to question the integrity of past elections and raise concerns about future ones. His recent address to the nation included terms like ‘Deep state,’ ‘Rigged and stolen,’ and ‘Manipulation,’ underscoring his assertion that unseen forces worked against him in the 2020 election.

The positioning of election integrity as a prominent issue suggests Trump’s unwillingness to concede defeat from the 2020 election. Using selectively declassified documents, he makes bold claims about vulnerabilities in the election system, though without evidence of altered outcomes.

In his second term, Trump has widened his focus on the 2020 election, appointing election skeptics to influential roles and attempting procedural changes to limit voting access. These moves are accompanied by efforts to retrieve voting records and remove officials who challenged his attempts to overturn the election defeat.

Trevor Potter, former Republican chairman of the Federal Election Commission, compares Trump’s relentless pursuit of election validation to Captain Ahab’s obsession in ‘Moby Dick.’ According to his close aides, Trump views the reevaluation of the 2020 election as essential to maintaining his sense of personal success. His administration now requires employees to support, or at least not oppose, the notion that he won the 2020 presidential race.
