President Donald Trump’s approval rating among millennials has declined, as shown in the latest Economist/YouGov poll. This pattern indicates a broader decrease in support from younger Americans. Currently, only 26 percent of people aged 30 to 44 approve of Trump’s performance as president, based on the poll conducted from August 14 to August 17. This is a drop from 29 percent the previous week and marks the fifth consecutive week of declining or steady approval among this group.
The poll also reports Trump’s general approval at 35 percent, with 61 percent disapproving of his job performance. This survey included 1,611 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 3.4 percent. White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales, when asked about the poll, highlighted Trump’s achievements, such as signing significant middle-class tax cuts, reducing prescription drug costs, securing borders, and driving violent crime rates to historic lows. Furthermore, a White House official noted achievements like a substantial decrease in violent crime, reduced migrant releases at the border, and a significant drop in prescription drug prices, as reported by The Washington Post.
Why Millennial Votes Matter
Millennials, born from 1981 to 1996, have become the largest age group, surpassing baby boomers. According to Pew Research Center, both the Trump and Kamala Harris campaigns have focused on reaching millennials through digital media during the 2024 election cycle.
What To Know
The Economist/YouGov poll reveals negative opinions from younger Americans regarding Trump’s presidency. Among voters aged 18 to 29, only 30 percent approve, while 67 percent disapprove of Trump’s job performance. For those aged 30 to 44, 26 percent approve, and 70 percent disapprove.
The poll indicates only 24 percent of young adults approve of Trump’s foreign policy handling, while 25 percent approve of his tariff policies. Millennials show even lower approval, with 21 percent on foreign policy and 19 percent on tariffs.
The last poll showing 26 percent or less approval among millennials was conducted from June 5-8. As the 2026 midterm elections approach, Trump’s overall approval rating remains near its lowest. Earlier this month, YouGov reported a 33 percent approval for Trump, against a 62 percent disapproval—the highest recorded for this president. The recent 35 percent approval shows slight improvement, yet the decline among younger voters significantly impacts Trump’s polling image.
