The two principal Democratic candidates in the race have consistently attempted to connect Mr. Pratt with President Trump, an unpopular figure among Los Angeles voters, who largely favor the Democratic party. Recent comments from Mr. Trump may make this association easier.
On a recent Wednesday, President Trump mentioned to reporters his support for Mr. Pratt. He stated, “I’d like to see him do well,” adding that he believed Mr. Pratt was “a big MAGA person.” This remark has heightened the efforts to frame Mr. Pratt as aligned with the former president.
Karen Bass, the current mayor since 2022, is striving to defend her position. She faces criticism for her absence during the devastating fires that hit Los Angeles in January 2025. Her main opponents are Mr. Pratt and Nithya Raman, a liberal member of the City Council. These candidates are competing in the primary scheduled for June 2. If no candidate achieves more than 50% of the vote, the two with the highest votes, regardless of party affiliation, will go to a runoff in the fall.
Recently, an intriguing move was made by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, which supports Ms. Bass. They spent $221,000 on an advertisement. Yet, rather than targeting Mr. Pratt, the ad seemed to improve his standing among Republican voters. With the significant Democratic majority in the city, consolidating Republican votes could give Mr. Pratt an edge over Ms. Raman.
Political analysts suggest that Ms. Bass’s supporters may be aiming to ensure that a Democrat does not oppose her in the general election. This strategy indicates the complex dynamics of the upcoming race.
