The Colorado State Democratic Party has criticized Governor Jared Polis for his decision to release Tina Peters from prison. This decision has sparked anger among Democratic voters.
Governor Polis, a Democrat, faced backlash on Wednesday for commuting the prison sentence of Peters. She is known for her support of former President Trump and her involvement in election-related controversies. Peters had been serving a nine-year sentence for tampering with voting machines.
More than 700 Democrats participated in a grassroots effort to express their disapproval of Polis’ decision. The state party central committee voted on this measure, with 89.8% supporting the censure.
Peters was a prominent election denier, imprisoned for attempting to prove that voting machines had been manipulated during the 2020 election. Many Democratic and some Republican leaders in Colorado urged Polis to deny her clemency, citing concerns about the risks she posed to election security.
Governor Polis defended his decision, suggesting that Peters’ sentence was disproportionately harsh due to her beliefs regarding election conspiracy theories. According to Eric Maruyama, a spokesperson for Polis, the governor made a choice that might not be universally popular but aligned with his views on fairness.
