Trump’s Influence in Republican Primaries: Key Targets and Results

President Donald Trump has played a significant role in swaying several election contests this year by supporting loyalists and opposing those critical of him. He seems set to challenge more Republicans who have criticized the MAGA movement as the midterm elections approach.

Recent Primary Results

On Tuesday, Republican Representative Thomas Massie faced defeat in the Kentucky 4th Congressional District primary. Trump-backed candidate Ed Gallrein emerged victorious after a tough campaign. The tension between Trump and Massie was evident, with Trump labeling Massie as “the worst congressman in the Republican Party.” Massie had challenged Trump on various issues, including foreign policy.

Similarly, GOP Senator Bill Cassidy lost in a Louisiana primary, unable to proceed to a runoff. Cassidy was beaten by Julia Letlow, another Trump-endorsed candidate. Cassidy had voted to convict Trump during his impeachment trial following the Capitol riot in January 2021.

MAGA’s Next Targets

After Massie’s defeat, influential conservative activists called for a new target. Far-right figure Laura Loomer warned Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul, suggesting he could be next.

Rand Paul

Senator Rand Paul may become a target due to his political alignment with Massie and his history of opposing Trump on key issues. As a libertarian-leaning Republican, Paul has opposed some Trump-led policies, particularly on foreign policy and spending. He has shared concerns over Trump’s use of executive power, specifically tariffs and emergency authorities.

While Paul might be on MAGA’s radar, he is somewhat protected. He’s not up for reelection until 2028, offering him short-term security from a Trump-backed challenge. Additionally, his national profile from a previous presidential bid provides some protection.

Lauren Boebert

Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert, once endorsed by Trump as a “MAGA warrior,” supported Massie in Kentucky. Boebert praised him while maintaining her support for Trump. Despite this dual endorsement, Trump publicly suggested a primary challenge to her on Truth Social, questioning her judgment for supporting Massie.

Boebert responded by reiterating her commitment to America First principles, acknowledging the risk of supporting Massie. Her primary in Colorado will occur on June 30, 2026, and she currently stands unopposed.

Victoria Spartz

Indiana Representative Victoria Spartz backed Massie during a contentious period in his primary race. Though not directly criticized by Trump, her alliance with Massie could attract MAGA scrutiny. Spartz secured the Republican primary on May 5 and advanced to the general election, insulating her from immediate primary challenges.

John Thune

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has had longstanding disagreements with Trump dating back to 2016. His refusal to support Trump’s Save America Act, especially the demand to end the filibuster, highlighted their differences. Although Thune tries to keep a professional relationship with Trump, his readiness to oppose Trump’s views has made him a potential target of MAGA’s discontent. Thune will not face election in 2026.
