President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that his proposed triumphal arch near Arlington Memorial Bridge would serve as a military facility.
The arch, initially planned as a monumental gateway and visitor attraction near Arlington National Cemetery, will now also house drones, snipers, and munitions. Trump shared on Truth Social that the decision resulted from a strong request by the U.S. military, citing national security needs. He did not provide details about the officials involved or any formal military requests.
This new development broadens the arch’s purpose and raises concerns about security, public access, and the storage of weapons close to a key ceremonial location. Earlier designs included galleries and an open-air observation deck inside the proposed structure.
Public records describe the project as a granite-clad structure approximately 250 feet tall, located at Memorial Circle. It includes plans for a plaza, landscaping, utilities, traffic adjustments, lighting, and security features. The documents did not mention the addition of drones or sniper positions, leading to questions about whether the current design will require adjustments and new federal reviews.
The National Park Service concluded that the originally planned project would have no substantial environmental impact. However, they noted that this assessment does not constitute a final decision or approval.
This is a developing story and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
