Turmoil and Tensions at CBS’s ’60 Minutes’ as Leadership Changes Spark Controversy

At CBS’s ’60 Minutes,’ a storm is brewing. Longtime correspondent Scott Pelley criticized CBS News head Bari Weiss, accusing her of damaging the flagship show and questioning the qualifications of its new executive producer, Nick Bilton.

During an introductory meeting on Monday, Pelley confronted Bilton. According to a Status website report, which had listened to a recording, Pelley questioned the decision to hire Bilton. Bilton, a former technology journalist and filmmaker, lacks traditional broadcast news experience, prompting Pelley to describe his qualifications as ‘slender.’

The controversy erupted after CBS recently dismissed several key figures, including Bilton’s predecessor, Tanya Simon, and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. Pelley expressed concern over these firings, calling them cruel.

“She’s murdering ‘60 Minutes,’” Pelley said about Weiss, arguing her actions prove a lack of love for the program. He further criticized changes she implemented at ‘CBS Evening News,’ labeling them catastrophic.

Despite Pelley’s accusations, both Weiss and Bilton had attempted to communicate with him privately. An anonymous source close to CBS News revealed their disappointment at the public airing of grievances, especially since efforts were made to engage Pelley.

The New York Times, which also reviewed the recorded meeting, noted the tension in Pelley’s voice. An unnamed executive indicated Weiss was prepared to attend but refrained at the last moment.

Weiss became a polarizing figure after taking control of CBS in October. Recent reports of Monday’s heated exchange followed a staff memo outlining a ‘new approach’ for the show. This involves expanding ’60 Minutes’ beyond its traditional format, with Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski emphasizing ambitions to create content that reflects the show’s legacy of ambition, fairness, and fearlessness.

According to Status, staff members showed support for Pelley during the meeting. Bilton, however, remained unphased by the confrontation. “I have been a journalist for 25 years, Scott,” Bilton countered, remaining assertive.
