The Carolina Hurricanes have tied the Stanley Cup Final series. Thanks to Jordan Staal’s two goals, they defeated the Golden Knights 5-3 in Game 4 in Las Vegas. The series stands at 2-2, with Game 5 returning to Carolina’s Lenovo Center on Thursday.
Game 4 did not require overtime like the previous two games but needed a breaker for the 3-3 tie entering the third period. Jordan Staal played a crucial role in this, as he became the first player in 44 years to score in each of the first four games of the Stanley Cup Final.
Seth Jarvis intercepted a wayward pass in Vegas’s zone with 13:39 left in the game. Carter Hart initially blocked Jarvis’ backhand shot but the puck found its way to Nikolaj Ehlers, who attempted to pass to Staal. Despite losing his skate edge, Staal managed to score a backhand goal while down on the ice.
While a one-goal lead proved risky previously, the Hurricanes’ defense and Brandon Bussi’s saves were pivotal this time. Bussi, chosen over Frederik Anderson, excelled in his series debut, stopping 7 of 20 shots. Nikolaj Ehlers ensured victory with a goal on an empty net.
The Hurricanes started the game fiercely, scoring three goals in the first period compared to one by Vegas captain Mark Stone. Logan Stankoven, Jackson Blake, and Jordan Staal each contributed to the early lead. Staal’s power-play goal was timely, as he skillfully recovered a rebound after Hart’s save.
In the second period, Vegas narrowed the gap. William Karlsson and Brett Howden scored, with Howden strengthening his Conn Smythe Trophy candidacy. Ultimately, Staal’s leadership and performance proved crucial for the Hurricanes.
