Coast Guard Seizes Cocaine Worth $54.5 Million

The U.S. Coast Guard successfully intercepted a suspected smuggling boat off the coast of Puerto Rico. Over 7,250 pounds of cocaine were seized, valuing approximately $54.5 million.

Details of the Interception

On August 22, the Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon, with the support of Customs and Border Protection air marine operations, intercepted the vessel nearly 50 miles off the U.S. territory’s coast. Five individuals on board were detained for investigation.

Boat Destroyed for Safety

According to the agency, the boat was destroyed after posing a hazard to navigation.

“An outstanding team effort thanks to seamless coordination with Coast Guard and CBP air assets,” said Lieutenant Commander Michael D. Torgesen. “Cutter Richard Dixon was pivotal in stopping this major shipment.”

Development in Drug Seizures

Admiral Adam Chamie praised the operation’s success in bolstering maritime security through ready crews and strong interagency partnerships. Charges in connection with the operation are still pending.

This significant bust came alongside another milestone, where 75,000 pounds of illicit narcotics worth $473 million were offloaded in Port Everglades, Miami.
