The Trump administration is scrutinizing the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo for perceived far-left messaging in its programming. A review by Fox News Digital revealed the zoo’s focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and climate change initiatives.
The Smithsonian National Zoo, located in Washington, D.C., hosts around 2 million visitors annually. It also operates a global conservation research program in over 40 countries. According to the zoo’s website, topics like gender equity and climate change are central to its mission. A 2021 article by seabird ecologist Autumn-Lynn Harrison and coral biologist Mary Hagedorn emphasized that addressing inequities in health and education worldwide can enhance climate action.
Fox News Digital discovered that the zoo promotes DEI, LGBTQ initiatives, and environmental justice. Searching “climate change” on the zoo’s site finds nearly 400 results, discussing its effects on wildlife and ecosystems.
The Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate DEI practices in federal entities include the Smithsonian. The 2023 Smithsonian Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives Report highlights DEI-focused activities at the zoo, such as diversity internships, LGBTQ family programs, and advocacy for inclusive workplace language.
Director Gabriella Hoffman from Independent Women’s Forum critiqued conservation efforts as infiltrated by DEI and climate alarmism, causing division. The Smithsonian Magazine reported on the zoo’s involvement in launching the Association of Minority Zoo and Aquarium Professionals to increase minority representation in the field.
Curator Craig Saffoe highlighted the lack of black and brown professionals in zoos and aims to make the field more inclusive. The zoo’s annual International Family Equality Day, serving the LGBTQ community, expanded partnerships in 2024.
Jason Hayes of the Heritage Foundation expressed concerns over ideologies influencing a conservation-focused institution. Despite administrative changes, profiles on the zoo’s site still indicate DEI integration in daily operations.
Although the Office of Diversity was dissolved in 2025, the zoo continues to partner with organizations emphasizing DEI. This includes the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and conservation-focused networks.
The current director, Brandie Smith, has emphasized the zoo’s mission of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. Organizations like the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Zoological Society of London collaborate with the zoo on species recovery efforts.
The Smithsonian has not provided additional comments on DEI implementation. A spokesperson stated the zoo’s commitment to conservation and public education while uniting millions with wildlife.
Criticism from Gabriella Hoffman warned of alienating visitors through political messaging rather than conservation efforts. Activist pursuits, she argued, could hinder conservation objectives.
