U.S. Military’s Counter-Drone Operations at the Southern Border

The U.S. military revealed its efforts to combat cartel drone activity on the southern border, announcing it intercepted “approximately 100” suspected cartel drones in August alone. This information was provided by a senior War Department official during a briefing to Fox News.

This disclosure marks the first instance where the Pentagon has openly discussed the frequency of counter-drone operations along the southern border. Sophisticated laser systems and other technology are utilized to halt drones suspected of cartel affiliation from entering U.S. territory.

Coordination with Mexican Authorities

According to a senior War Department official, Task Force–Southern Border executed these drone takedowns using specialized counter-drone equipment which was provided and integrated by other military units. Every operation was meticulously planned and coordinated with Mexican military and border authorities, ensuring that operations did not interfere or provoke unintended conflicts between forces on either side of the border.

Army Sgt. Drew Scheffer, part of Joint Task Force Southern Border, has been monitoring the southern border near Santa Teresa, N.M. as of April 12. These military patrols are part of measures introduced during the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal migration.

A Complex Defense Strategy

The counter-drone operations are a segment of a broader initiative aimed at swiftly deploying defense mechanisms against drones. This involves combining several technologies, deploying trained personnel, and adhering to updated military directives. The approach emphasizes a multifaceted strategy instead of relying on a singular system to counter the drone threat.

According to Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson, defensive counter-drone technology is being implemented to safeguard personnel and border security operations against drone threats tied to cartels.

Increased Military Activity

Efforts on the border continue as the Trump administration employs military force against cartels across the Western Hemisphere, conducting targeted strikes against alleged drug traffickers. Recently, senior administration officials praised President Donald Trump’s authorization of military force as an unprecedented strategy to defend against security threats from cartels.

An official stated that the deployment of this strategy has led to a notable decline in U.S. casualties inflicted by cartels historically.
