The Trump administration has dismissed concerns about the depletion of the U.S. military’s advanced long-range missiles in the wake of the conflict with Iran. According to a report, the Army has used nearly all of its Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM) during the five-month conflict. Officials worry that this depletion could hinder responses to future crises involving countries like China and Russia.
The White House countered claims that the military lacks necessary weapons. The administrative stance is clear: the U.S. possesses more munitions than any other nation. In a statement, President Donald Trump emphasized that despite large donations of resources to Ukraine and Europe, the U.S. remains well-equipped. He confirmed that defense companies are ramping up production by expanding their facilities and increasing manufacturing rates.
“Our defense companies are, at this moment, making more munitions than they have ever made before, in addition to expanding their plants and equipment at record levels.” – President Donald Trump
Reports suggest America’s precision weapons, which take years to produce, depleted quickly. Inventories of Patriot and THAAD missile interceptors, along with Tomahawk cruise missiles, have also diminished. Despite this, the Pentagon maintains that the military can execute necessary operations globally.
The Pentagon and analysts note that extended conflicts strain high-end munitions inventories. The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates a significant depletion of Patriot and THAAD interceptor stockpiles since the start of the Iran conflict, aligning with internal data. Despite these concerns, the Pentagon emphasizes the military’s readiness and capacity.
Military planners value ATACMS and PrSM for their long-range strike capability, with potential to engage heavily defended targets from afar. In contrast, Patriot and THAAD systems are defensive, intercepting incoming ballistic missiles. Meanwhile, Tomahawk missiles enable naval long-range strikes.
The challenge of sustaining prolonged conflicts at a high intensity has prompted efforts to integrate drones and autonomous systems alongside precision missiles. This approach aims to use expensive precision weapons strategically while deploying cost-effective drones for various missions.
Trump has held discussions with major defense contractors to accelerate missile production and expand capacity. Following meetings, commitments have been made to increase production of advanced missile systems. As part of the administration’s budget plans, focus has shifted towards increasing investment in munitions production and missile defense.
