Two U.S. Army soldiers lost their lives in Jordan during Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. These are the first U.S. troop casualties from direct Iranian fire since the war began. The Defense Department has identified the soldiers as Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Carrollton, Texas.
First Lieutenant Tyler Feehan, who was killed in Friday’s attacks, will be posthumously promoted to captain. He will receive the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Action Badge. Feehan was stationed with the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to Southern Utah University, he was on the verge of obtaining a Master of Business Administration, which will now be awarded posthumously.
Mindy Benson, the president of Southern Utah University, expressed condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with his family, fellow service members, classmates, and all who knew and loved Tyler.”
Private Isabella Gonzales was with the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command in Ansbach, Germany. She graduated from Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas, last year. The Lewisville Independent School District mourned her loss, highlighting her decision to serve in the military after graduation.
“She gave her life in that service, and our district is heartbroken by her loss,” the school district stated.
Gonzales died on Friday, while Feehan succumbed a day later. Details on the incidents remain undisclosed. A third service member is missing from the attacks, with U.S. Central Command announcing the discovery of “unidentified remains” pending examination.
The war with Iran highlights the risks faced by American soldiers across the Middle East. Despite not being directly on Iranian soil, these forces are vulnerable due to the ongoing conflict involving drones, missiles, and airplanes.
President Donald Trump has defended the war as necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Political pressure mounts for him to end the conflict, amidst casualties and escalating fighting.
An additional American service member was killed in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from an Iranian drone. Another service member sustained minor injuries.
The military is withholding further information pending family notifications. Iranian authorities claim recent U.S. strikes have resulted in significant casualties on their side as well.
The conflict has seen civilian infrastructure targeted, affecting millions. Workers on ships, as well as foreign workers and residents in Gulf countries, Israel, and Lebanon, have also been impacted.
Previous U.S. military fatalities occurred soon after the war outbreak. Six American soldiers were killed in Kuwait following an Iranian drone strike at a civilian port. These soldiers belonged to a logistics unit from Iowa.
A seventh soldier died from injuries sustained in an attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on March 1.
Later in March, the crash of a KC-135 refueling aircraft supporting operations against Iran resulted in six more casualties.
Additionally, a Navy pilot perished in a helicopter crash in the Arabian Sea. This incident was initially deemed an emergency landing without indications of hostile actions. The remaining crew members were rescued.
