U.S. to Reduce Military Contributions to NATO

The United States plans to decrease its military contributions to NATO in Europe, as revealed by two senior European officials. This decision, communicated in a document reviewed by The New York Times, outlines significant reductions in American forces committed to NATO operations. The reduction aims to decrease the U.S.’s protection commitment to European allies.

The drawdown involves several key changes:

  • The number of F-16 and F-15E fighter jets will be reduced from approximately 150 to 100.
  • Maritime reconnaissance aircraft will be cut from 26 to 15, and all eight aerial refueling tanker jets previously available to Europe will be eliminated.
  • A missile-launching submarine and an aircraft carrier, along with multiple warships and jets, will be reassigned.
  • One of the two bomber groups assigned for Europe’s defense will be reallocated.

The Pentagon has issued only a general statement about reducing commitments in Europe without detailing the numbers.

NATO was originally established to protect American allies in Europe from external threats, particularly from the Soviet Union. The reduction could limit NATO’s capabilities for long-range strikes and surveillance, and affect monitoring of Russian submarine activity. Although European countries have similar missile capabilities, they often see American involvement as a stronger deterrent.

Officials have not disclosed when these changes will take place, but it is expected to happen sooner than European countries had anticipated. This shift may affect NATO’s strategic operations and readiness against potential threats.
