UCLA has announced a leadership change within its athletic department as Tim Harris takes over as the new CEO and athletic director. This decision follows the departure of Martin Jarmond. Harris served as the longtime president of business operations for the Los Angeles Lakers. Chancellor Julio Frenk conveyed this change to the university community, calling it a ‘new path forward for UCLA Athletics.’
Jarmond, who had served as athletic director for six years, is leaving the role immediately. During his tenure, UCLA captured three NCAA championships last season, marking a victory for the women’s basketball team among others. Despite these successes, the athletic department has reported financial challenges, facing deficits for seven consecutive years and accumulating a shortfall of $241 million.
Harris is set to bring his extensive experience from the Lakers, having contributed over 35 years to the NBA franchise. A UCLA alumnus, Harris graduated in 1989 with a degree in sociology and was a goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team.
Harris will serve on a pro bono basis, as noted by Frenk. He underscores a commitment to creating an athletic model that not only sustains itself financially but also provides opportunities for student-athletes and coaches. This direction is deemed crucial given the significant debt the athletic program carries.
The university has joined the Big Ten Conference two years ago, which increased their revenue through media rights fees but also introduced new travel costs. Despite a reduction in the deficit to $21.6 million for the last fiscal year, the university has continued to support the athletic department with financial assistance.
This leadership shift happens amidst rapid changes in college sports, especially with athletes monetizing their name and likeness. Frenk emphasizes the need for UCLA Athletics to lead these transformations actively.
In a significant appointment made by Jarmond before his exit, Bob Chesney has been enlisted from James Madison to boost UCLA’s football program. The Bruins are set to begin their season against California on Saturday.
