The Ukraine peace process has faced interruptions, as the Kremlin acknowledged. Russian missile strikes in Ukraine are believed to complicate peace efforts, according to former President Donald Trump. He indicated that a Russian missile hitting a Kyiv apartment building, killing 24 people, stalled progress in the ongoing four-year conflict.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov highlighted current Ukrainian strikes on Russian civilian areas. A large drone attack occurred over the weekend, marking one of Moscow’s most significant assaults in over a year, with at least three casualties reported near the capital. Debris landed on Russia’s largest airport, but no damage was reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the drone strikes, describing them as justified. These actions seemed to retaliate against recent Russian strikes on Kyiv. Russian attacks on Ukraine injured eight people, raising tensions further.
In Russian cities, Ukrainian drones have caused fatalities and infrastructural damage. A drone strike in Khimki, near Moscow, claimed the life of a woman, while two men died in the Pogorelki village. High-rise buildings and infrastructure were also affected. Belgorod region authorities reported a person killed by a drone strike on a truck.
Within Moscow, 12 people sustained injuries, mainly near an oil refinery. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin noted that the refinery infrastructure remained intact. The Indian Embassy reported an Indian worker’s death from a drone strike, with three others injured.
Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport confirmed drone debris without operational disruptions. Russian defenses intercepted 81 drones targeting Moscow, the largest assault since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. Over the Crimean Peninsula and other regions, 556 drones were destroyed overnight.
Zelenskyy mentioned drones traveled over 500 kilometers from Ukraine, overcoming Russian defenses around Moscow. He defended Ukraine’s actions as necessary responses to Russian wartime aggression. Nigel Gould Davies noted that Ukraine’s actions serve as retaliation, following recent attacks on Kyiv.
The strikes followed a short ceasefire, allowing Russia to celebrate its annual Victory Day on May 9. The conflict portrays Ukraine’s capacity to strike near the Russian capital, intensifying Russian concerns over recent battlefield setbacks and economic challenges.
Drone attacks on oil facilities in Russia have led to visible fires and environmental consequences, such as toxic rain, affecting distant regions. Though the economic effects remain unclear, these actions aim to cut Russian oil exports, a crucial revenue source for Russia’s military activities in Ukraine.
