Kate Koval, a Ukrainian center and former standout for LSU women’s basketball, has addressed her exit from the team. In August, Koval announced her departure, with LSU head coach Kim Mulkey attributing the decision to ‘personal reasons.’ On Wednesday, Koval provided more details via her official Instagram account.
Koval’s statement confirmed her departure was influenced by LSU’s recruitment of 17-year-old Russian center Anna Minaeva. ‘After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to step away from the LSU Women’s Basketball program and withdraw from LSU,’ Koval wrote.
She continued, ‘At the conclusion of last season, I fully intended to return and continue my collegiate career at LSU. However, in April, several days after the transfer portal had closed, I was informed of the decision to sign a Russian player.’
Koval explained her decision further, citing her father’s service in the Ukrainian Army and the impact of ‘Russian aggression’ on her friends and family. Many have faced serious consequences due to the ongoing conflict.
Coach Mulkey defended her decision to recruit Minaeva, stating she acted in the best interest of the team. ‘I cannot make a decision to not recruit somebody that can help our program because of a conflict between two countries,’ Mulkey asserted.
Mulkey hoped to use both Koval and Minaeva as ‘ambassadors’ to bridge geopolitical divides and promote unity within the locker room. However, for Koval, the personal stakes were too high. She stated, ‘The timing of this situation and the deeply personal effect it has had on me, my family, and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me.’
Despite her disappointment, Koval expressed her desire to continue playing college basketball. ‘I hope the NCAA recognizes the circumstances surrounding my situation and understands the seriousness and deep nature of this matter. More than anything, I hope I am given the opportunity to compete at another school during the upcoming 2026–27 basketball season,’ she stated.
