Ukrainian anti-ship missiles and drones launched an attack on a key Russian naval base on the Black Sea, marking a significant operation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this move, highlighting the growing proficiency of drones developed by Kyiv.
Since the full-scale invasion over the past four years, Ukraine’s advanced air and sea drones have repeatedly struck Russian vessels. These include both warships and oil tankers in the Black Sea. Ukrainian officials claim this has effectively constrained the movements of Russia’s once-dominant Black Sea Navy, showcasing one of Ukraine’s significant wartime achievements.
However, Ukrainian leaders believe Russian President Vladimir Putin remains determined to continue the conflict. Despite Russia’s slow progress on the battlefield and United States efforts for a diplomatic solution, Putin plans additional troop mobilizations. President Zelenskyy cited intelligence that suggests plans for a rapid mobilization of several hundred thousand Russians by year’s end.
Recent reports indicate that Russia is ramping up the production of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, which pose challenges to Ukrainian air defenses. Meanwhile, Ukraine seeks to enhance its weapons manufacturing through international partnerships.
Russian Mobilization Plans
Despite concerns about potential mobilization, there have been no indications from Putin or senior Russian officials of an imminent large-scale call-up. Some Russian officials have accused Ukraine of spreading misinformation to destabilize public opinion within Russia. Lawmaker Andrei Gurulyov dismissed such rumors, suggesting they are attempts to disrupt the internal situation.
After the unpopular partial mobilization of 300,000 men four years ago, Russia now relies on volunteers attracted by high pay. However, the decree authorizing the partial mobilization in September 2022 remains open-ended, allowing for resumption if needed.
Recent Strikes on Russian Ports
President Zelenskyy confirmed a recent Ukrainian operation targeting the naval base in Novorossiysk, a significant Russian fleet stronghold. This attack affected air defense systems, piers, and other infrastructure. Previously, Russia had relocated a majority of its fleet to Novorossiysk following Ukrainian strikes on Sevastopol in Crimea.
Thousands of Ukrainian drones targeted regions including Novorossiysk, Anapa, Gelendzhik, and the Temryuk district. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported casualties and damage across the region, affecting residential and industrial areas. The strikes damaged critical grain terminals, with operations halted at one site.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its air defenses intercepted more than 500 Ukrainian drones during these attacks.
Significance of Novorossiysk
Novorossiysk is a pivotal oil hub, hosting the Grushovaya oil terminal, among the largest in southern Russia. While no damage to the terminal was reported, Ukraine’s attacks raised concerns in the United States, due to impacts on oil interests in Kazakhstan. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium, managing oil exports involving major U.S. companies, connects Kazakhstan to Novorossiysk.
President Putin accused Western nations of maritime piracy, citing the boarding and detaining of Russian oil tankers by European countries. He vowed retaliation if such actions continued, calling the seizures “piracy.”
Attacks Inside Ukraine
On the Crimean Peninsula, Russian defenses intercepted 115 Ukrainian drones over Sevastopol. In Southern Ukraine, a Russian drone attack resulted in casualties and infrastructure damage in the Kherson region, destroying a shopping mall in Zaporizhzhia.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian ports, including Chornomorsk in Odesa, were hit, impacting fuel and military supplies. A vessel carrying military equipment and an oil tanker for Ukraine’s armed forces were among those targeted.
