Unauthorized Fireworks Cause Chaos During Rome Rehearsal

Unauthorized fireworks in Rome caused a mass stampede of horses during a rehearsal for Italy’s Republic Day parade. The incident occurred late Friday near the historic Baths of Caracalla as military and law enforcement units were preparing for the June 2 national event, according to a Reuters report.

Approximately 35 horses fled onto city streets following the unexpected fireworks. Videos showed the horses running along Via Cristoforo Colombo while drivers captured the scene. The search to recover the horses continued until dawn, with the last horse found about nine miles from where the chaos began.

The fireworks went off shortly before 11:30 p.m., causing panic among the ceremonial horses. Some riders were on horseback, while others were leading the horses by hand when the animals broke free. A 22-year-old soldier reportedly sustained broken ribs and a punctured lung during the commotion. At least 15 horses were injured, though none required euthanasia.

Italian outlet ANSA reported that the stampede also injured three young soldiers from the Montebello Lancers and a 29-year-old policewoman. Emergency crews and police were stationed near the location as the panicked horses fled through Rome’s streets.

The Rome Local Police Command is investigating how the unauthorized fireworks were set off near the rehearsal site. Four traffic police officers were involved, with one officer allegedly igniting a battery of fireworks about 200 yards from the horses. This officer has been identified as a 50-year-old member who recently joined the force.

Video and witness statements suggest the explosions and the horses’ escape happened simultaneously. Rome police commander Mario De Sclavis told Corriere della Sera that the incident has harmed the image of the Corps and its officers. He assured that the agency will take steps to hold those responsible accountable.
