The quarterback situation in Atlanta has been among the NFL’s most closely observed developments. After an offseason marked by injuries and a brief period with Cooper Rush at the helm, some stability seemed to emerge when Michael Penix Jr. returned as the starting quarterback.
Unfortunately, during a tough game against the Baltimore Ravens, Penix sustained a rib injury after being sacked. Although he briefly returned before the end of regulation, he could not continue in overtime. This forced Tua Tagovailoa to step in, who ultimately threw a game-ending interception. Penix’s condition remains uncertain for the critical Week 6 game against the Chicago Bears.
After undergoing an MRI earlier this week, Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski expressed optimism about Penix starting on Sunday, provided no setbacks occur. Penix attended practice on Wednesday as a limited participant, which offers hope for his return. Stefanski, when asked about Penix’s rib injury, noted the quarterback is “feeling better” but did not provide detailed insights.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned on “The Pat McAfee Show” that the rib injury did not seem to be long-term. This week, Penix’s practice involvement will depend on his recovery, according to Stefanski. “I want to see how he’s feeling,” Stefanski stated. Handling such injuries requires careful assessment of mobility and comfort.
By Wednesday, reports indicated that Penix took all the first-team reps at practice. Responding to inquiries about his condition, Penix stated, “I felt good today at practice. I just need to stay on top of my rehab and ensure I’m doing what’s necessary.” He expressed confidence in being ready for the upcoming game.
Penix’s history with injuries, including a recent ACL injury requiring surgery last November, is well-documented. His recovery from that injury delayed his start this season.
While Penix’s status is high priority, the Bears are also facing uncertainty with their quarterback Caleb Williams, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. Bears coach Ben Johnson confirmed Williams was a full participant in recent practices.
