Unexpected Sturgeon Sighting Captured in Florida River

While aiming to record a peaceful swim, Tiffany Raulerson experienced a surprising encounter in the Suwannee River, Florida. A native of the state, Raulerson regularly deals with local wildlife. However, this time she filmed something unexpected—a fish leaping out of the water.

Raulerson believed she spotted a Gulf sturgeon. In Florida, the Suwannee River hosts the largest population of Gulf sturgeon. These fish are a prominent feature in the area. They are among 27 sturgeon species globally, with over half considered critically endangered.

Raulerson’s surprise occurred during one of her family’s frequent river visits. The river holds special significance for them, and capturing the sturgeon encounter on video made it memorable.

Raulerson shared the footage on her TikTok @tiffanyraulerson6 on September 8. The video has garnered over 38 million views. After seeing the fish, Raulerson turned to the camera in disbelief, displaying the phrase “Ain’t no way, man.”

Understanding Sturgeon

Sturgeon have existed since the time of dinosaurs, with several species in North America. Gulf sturgeon can reach 6 to 8 feet in length and weigh nearly 200 pounds. Though intimidating, they don’t prey on humans. Their diet consists of small aquatic organisms. However, sturgeon can leap out of the water. Their size and speed can present dangers if someone is in their path.

When encountering sturgeon or similar animals while swimming, keep a safe distance. Avoid touching or chasing them. If uncomfortable, calmly exit the water to prevent unnecessary interactions.

TikTok Viewer Reactions

Raulerson’s video initiated lively debate among viewers. Many were amazed by the fish’s size and agility. Others questioned the species or video authenticity.

Raulerson noted diverse reactions, from astonishment to skepticism. “It really highlights the impact of such a wild, natural moment shared online,” she said.

Despite the debates, the video highlights nature’s ability to surprise, even in familiar settings like the Suwannee River.
